America's obsession

Everyone watches "Jaywalking" on Jay Leno in disbelief. How can Americans be sooooooo stupid?
Let me explain.
When we watch our news, we only hear about the United States. We hear about all the shootings, all the political craziness, all the tainted toy recalls and of course, all the celebrity bullshit.
I couldn't believe when every time I turned on the TV, all I heard about was Anna Nicole Smith. And months after her death, I still hear about her and one news channel reached the lowest depths when it showed pictures of her dead body in a hotel room.
Now, everyone has latched onto Britney Spears and will continue to suck her story dry until they push her to her psychological limits and she jumps off the tallest building in LA. As my Panamanian professor would say, "It's not science rocket" that the girl has some serious psychological problems. But instead of respecting that and giving her space so things aren't worse for her, the media documents every minute and every second of her day. Not only that, but they gleefully report on the fact that she is spiraling out of control.
With all of this celebrity drama taking up a large portion of the news, there is no time for thinking. When all we get fed is mind-numbing garbage from the big black box, are you really surprised that we don't know where Iraq is?
