This is what i am listening to this week:

Não me parece... não me parece...

Brooklyn Bridge

Fim-de-semana, sol radioso, temperatura amena.

Actividades extra-curriculares

A competição é cerrada.

Grande seca. Desperdício de tempo e energia. Saí a meio.

Separate beds

Yes, we have officially turned into an old couple. Nuno has a head cold (this is what happens when you don't take your vitamin C, drink water and sanitize your hands after riding in the subway.) He started snoring like a grizzly bear Tuesday. After both of us tossing and turning all night - me from his animal-like nighttime noises and him from the occasional elbow I gave him in an attempt to shut him up - Nuno decided to have mercy on me and sleep on the worn out cushions in our kitchen/living room.
Even though I could still hear him through the bedroom door and underneath my pillow, for the most part we both rested much better last night. So, the arrangement still stands and I will have the bed to myself.
It's all over now, isn't it?

Eu entendo

Two of my students were talking yesterday about something that I could sympathize with. They were saying that when they would go to a shop or a cafe or restaurant that sometimes they would get so nervous speaking English that their minds would go blank. Under the pressure, they would forget the simplest words. Or how when making their best effort to speak English, (and they are both fluent speakers) they would be asked, "Would you prefer to speak in Spanish?"
I told them that the same thing happened to me for the entire three years I lived in Portugal. (Not asking me if I preferred to speak in Spanish, obviously :-) )I explained that people were trying to be helpful (too helpful), but that they had to be firm in demanding that the conversation continue in English. And to not be discouraged.
I know how it is. After going to a cafe and ordering a "cafe" and being responded to in English a bazillion times, I gave up learning Portuguese. I have no willpower. What can I say?
It was nice though to talk to two people who understood how frustrating that situation is. Not too many people do.

Realmente à noite sinto-me pior.

oh New York

Well, it's true that New York is dirty. Dirtier than I remembered. So many things left on the streets and sidewalks. It's noisy. Sirens, cars honking, and music beating rhthymically. People yelling, sometimes they are crazy people.
I walk down the street and people bump into me or cross my path. Lights change and a new flux of people come in my direction. Tourists smiling and laughing - loving the bright lights. Native New Yorkers talking on their cell phones making arrangements to meet at the southern corner of 7th Avenue and 32nd Street or whatever complex locations they want to give. And I am in the middle of all of them, not belonging to either group really. But loving it all the same.

Monday, February 26, 2007

Which way?

As some of you know, my direction sense isn't the best. That is why New York City is for me. Even I can make my way around on my own. I just have to know where I am and where I want to go. And then it's all a matter of uptown or downtown.
Why can't everything be this simple?

Penny, nickel, dime

Não me parece.

No entanto, o dinheiro americano continua a irritar-me.

Wanted: New apartment

I guess my luck as a goat doesn't end. Today we didn't have any hot water and therefore no heat in our building.
Nuno and I went shopping in hopes that when we returned the hot water would be working.
But no, the water was still ice cold.
I waited and waited and waited and waited until 8 p.m. Until I couldn't stand it anymore. I had to take a bath and I wasn't about to take a cold shower in February. So I started the process of heating up saucepans full of water and slowly filling up our very large bathtub with hot water. After I had accumulated about five inches of water I felt it was enough to get cleaned up.
As soon as I stepped out of the tub, I heard the strange hissing sound our water radiators make when they are working. Sure enough. The hot water was back on. Just in the nick of time.
It's an understatement to say I can't wait until we have our own place with a little more space and a separate kitchen so that we aren't cooking dinner in the same room we watch TV.
I do love our view of the Chrysler building and the Empire State building. But I could live with out it if it meant that it took more than 12 steps to walk across our apartment.

I don't love Sigfried

So, Nuno and I went to the New York Public Library today for a little cultural experience. We went for the first act of a Wagner opera. Before we left, I thought that since it was only the first act that it would be a nice thing to do for the afternoon. I figured the opera would be in Italian. aren't they all? I didn't know what the opera was about, but I assumed all operas were about love. And not only that, but they were always sad love stories that ended with someone dying. Little did I know that things weren't that simple.
When we arrived, we sat in the middle of the auditorium in the middle of the row beside a guy about our age.
Then the music started. First the piano. Then three women walked on the stage and began singing in GERMAN. Yuck! A half hour later, the women exited the stage and the piano continued. I thought it was over. Then, a man and a woman entered the stage. Blah blah blahaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa in German. I have no idea what the hell is going on. And as far as the summary of the story handed out at the door, something about a ring and a man who will rule the earth and two men wanting to fight and then being friends then going to war and then I don't really know what the hell is the point.
So, forty minutes later the man and woman left the stage. The piano continued. Yes. It must be over. For sure. Oh no. I realized that behind the podium there were nine chairs. Why nine? We had only seen five.
Then three more people took the stage. More singing. Blaaaaaaah blah blah blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! After another half hour, I started to subtract the number of singers again from the number of chairs. One chair left. Damn! Wait. Maybe the chair is for the pianist! I look at the summary of the act again. That's when I realize the pianist would not be leaving his bench to sit on stage. No. There would be one more singer.
She entered the stage. I knew that when she left the stage "in dispair" that there was only one paragraph of the summary left for the singers to wail on about. After mentally sending her off the stage like ten times, I started to calculate again the amount of time each paragraph took. The summary had like five paragraphs and each one took the singers an average of forty minutes to go on and on and on and on and on, all of which I didn't understand as it was in German. So after the woman ran off the stage "in dispair" I decided I had had enough. I wanted to exit stage left too. So Nuno and I agreed to make a break for it.
I don't think operas are my thing. I will stick to musicals.

Resumo do meu Carnaval

Hey Mr. Piggy

Happy New Year! I hope that 4705 is a prosperous year for you and your family.
No, I haven’t lost my mind. It’s Chinese New Year! And although New York City is famous for its New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, those happening right now in Manhattan’s Chinatown attract quite a crowd too.
It’s time to say goodbye to the year of the dog and say hello to Mr. Piggy. And don’t be fooled by those who say it’s the year of the golden pig in order to sell you trinkets made of gold; it’s actually the year of the fire pig. Don’t ask me to explain this to you. The whole system is actually pretty complicated – at least it is to me. It’s based on five cycles of 12 years each and each full cycle takes 60 years to complete. Get it? Got it? Good!
The whole thing started when Buddha decided to hold a meeting with all the animals to decide which animal would represent which year. Since there were only 12 spots available, the animals had to be fast and clever to be among the first to arrive at the meeting.
In fact, this ancient story explains the rivalry between cats and rats. If you aren’t happy that cats are excluded from the New Year celebrations – blame that rat – the rat. That cheese-loving double-crosser tricked his supposed best friend – the cat – into missing the very important meeting and missing his chance to forever be immortalized in Chinese New Year’s celebrations. Lesson to be learned; never trust a rat!
So what does the year of the pig mean to you? If you have been thinking about starting your own family – or if you are that pushy relative who always asks the newlyweds in the family when they plan on enlarging the family tree – this year is for you! The year of the pig is a great year to have babies as the pig symbolizes birth in Chinese tradition. Uh, what exactly are they trying to say with that? I know babies aren’t so cute when they are born, but I wouldn’t go that far.
While the year of the pig traditionally is great for babies, you might want to reconsider the idea. The predictions for this year by Chinese soothsayers aren’t the best. Violence, plagues and natural disasters are expected this year. So more of the same, basically.
As I searched the internet for information about Chinese New Year, I wasn’t too happy to discover my own animal sign. Of course, everyone wants to be the dragon. But I wasn’t expecting that kind of prized position. It would be funny to tell people I was a monkey. I would be proud to announce that I was a tiger. My husband is lucky enough to be a rabbit. But me? I am a goat. Anyone who knows me knows that I have always had a troublesome relationship with goats. I have a picture of myself as a kid at a petting zoo being forced to caress the hoofed creature and the look on my face says it all – yuck. As an adult, my disgust with goats didn’t fade as my sadistic parents kept a small army of them in our barn. I wasn’t forced to feed them or play with them, but once a day they were allowed to roam freely around the yard. If I wanted to enjoy the sunshine or chat with my parents outside I had to barricade myself in an enclosed structure to keep from being harmed by those overly curious devils. Let’s just say it’s an understatement to say I have no love for goats. Talk about bad karma. Knowing my luck, when I return in my next life I will come back as a goat.

Fui ver. A instalação não me pareceu impressionante.
